I didn’t understand the cost at the time.
I just kept performing.
Until my body made the decision for me.
That turning point reshaped my life and now shapes the work I do with high performers whose outward success masks internal depletion.

I grew up in an environment shaped by chronic stress, emotional absence and domestic abuse. By sixteen, I was living independently, carrying the imprint of eight of the nine Adverse Childhood Experiences.
I didn’t have the language for trauma then.
But my nervous system was wired for survival long before I entered the professional world.
That early wiring made me highly capable under pressure and highly vulnerable to absorbing it.
Many of my clients recognise this pattern as competence built on endurance.

I never planned to become a lawyer. The profession found me through lived experience.
After leaving an abusive relationship in 1990, I navigated seven years of private law children proceedings. When I acted to protect my daughter from a safeguarding risk, I was criticised and labelled hostile for a decision that today would be considered best practice.
That injustice shaped my career. I decided the system had to be challenged from the inside.
For 27 years I worked at the intersection of trauma, safeguarding, and high-stakes decision-making. The workload was relentless. The exposure to human suffering constant. Powering through was the culture.
I became exceptionally good at functioning under pressure.
But powering through always has a cost.

There was no visible collapse.
I continued performing.
But something had shifted.
Over the following years my health deteriorated. Diagnoses accumulated.
Pain became normal. Fatigue became baseline. Cognitive sharpness changed, although I told myself I was coping.

During trauma training in 2016, I began to understand the physiological cost of unresolved stress. In one session I released the trauma of nearly losing my daughter which had manifested as the loss of use of my left arm, something my body had been holding for over a decade.
Months later, I received a cancer diagnosis.
As my colleagues returned to work after the Christmas break, I was still recovering from a nine-hour operation but desperate to return to work. It was in trying to reconcile my reality I was forced to confront how tightly my identity had become tied to being a lawyer, rather than the many other parts of who I was.
For the first time in decades, my nervous system slowed.
The decisive moment came in May 2017. During professional training, I broke down and admitted for the first time that I did not want to return to my legal career.
That was when I understood, this wasn’t ordinary stress. It was accumulated systemic burnout.
As I moved through my 50s, symptoms attributed to menopause revealed something deeper, prolonged stress had impaired digestion, metabolism and physiological regulation resulting in an excessive weight gain despite healthy lifestyle changes.
Burnout wasn’t an event.
It was an accumulation of psychological, neurological, and biological symptoms
That completed the picture.

I would now recommend to anyone who is considering hypnotherapy and whose personal development has been halted by having labelled it as scary, as I did that they get in touch with you. Your warmth and commitment will enable anyone looking to take the steps they need to begin their healing journey to feel that this is possible and to feel unequivocally that they are in safe hands with you.
Enter Jacqui. After an initial consultation I decided that working with her was the way forward. I followed her process to the letter. Emotions surfaced that I never knew existed. Physical tears of pain and anguish were released during our meetings, but Jacqui just ‘knew’ what to say and how to say it. She introduced me to Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as ‘tapping’. I thought EFT wasn’t for me and that it was all a bit woo woo. But I still secretly do some when needed. She also practiced some clinical hypnosis with me. Again me being the eternal cynic pooh poohed it at first. I had never kept a daily journal, Jacqui introduced me to this practice and it became a positive comfort.
